follow the money

Ever wondered where your town fits on the political spectrum?

Okay, so you probably know that already. But now you can see who your friends and neighbors pay good money to support, via a new and somewhat frightening site called Fundrace 2004. Simply go here, type in your zip code, and spend a few minutes feeling as omniscient as Big Brother (especially as you get contributors' home addresses as well).

We live in Bloomington, Indiana: not quite Berkeley East (that would be Madison), but close enough. I typed in “47404” and came up with a few tidbits.

  • Elaine Mellencamp, model, and John Mellencamp, entertainer: $2000 each for John Edwards. [The Mellencamps are our resident token celebs.]
  • Kenneth Nunn, attorney: $1500 to John Edwards. [Hardly surprising: Nunn is the best advertised ambulance chaser in the region. Loathed by all except successful plaintiffs.]
  • Jeff Davis, owner, Housier Buddy Liquors Inc: Wesley Clark $2000. [Perhaps helps explain why Clark so often seems a barking moonbat?]
  • Bruce A. Furr, Chairman, International Outsourcing LLC: George W. Bush $1000. [Life imitating The Onion, or at least a Kerry campaign ad.]
  • A number of associate instructors at Indiana University are listed as giving substantial sums to Howard Dean. Poor bastards. As an AI myself…well, let's just say we're not made of money.

I started losing interest upon reaching the small donation levels. But overall, Dean appears to have swept the fundraising stakes here—especially among those affiliated with IU. Not terribly surprising, that.

UPDATE: As Tim Blair reports, some bitter lefties are not pleased by freedom of information.
