how to properly christen a weblog

I thought about knocking a bottle of Guinness against my monitor but reconsidered.

It's been about eighteen months since I first decided to try my hand at blogging. In terms of trend life cycles, that's an eternity, but I wanted to wait until I was sure I could devote the time necessary—rather like waiting to have kids until time permits, it seems.

So here we are: My good friend and boffo web designer James Card had time to spare the past couple of weeks, and convinced me to devote the energy to getting this thing rolling. All credit for translating my vague ideas into reality belongs to him; check this for a very rough vision of what I was thinking back in the spring, and then poke around the real site a bit. I'm biased, but this is undoubtedly one of the best looking blogs around. Now I only need to provide worthy content.

Which this semester shall be a challenge, as I'm currently teaching a double load, finishing my dissertation proposal, and assisting the fair Samantha (in small ways) while she completes her own thesis. For this reason, and several others, I have asked Doug Heinz to join the team as permanent guest blogger. He brings a lot to the mix, including knowledge in areas about which I am woefully ignorant (such as business and finance) and the perspective which comes from being a conservative in the hostile territory that is San Francisco.

I will still be posting in the next few months, and hopefully on most days, though not at great length. At the beginning of 2004 I intend to deliver a good deal more on topics ranging from the war to election year politics to philosophy of science. The last category will include ruminations on my dissertation topic, which, although somewhat technical, should hopefully still prove of more than limited interest. Stay tuned.

A final note: the site is entirely finished save for a few details that are my responsibility to tidy up. Most prominent among these is the blogroll (for those unfamiliar with blogspeak, that's the set of links in the right column). I will have things squared away within the next few days. In the meantime we'd love to get feedback; you can leave comments below, or get more contact information here.

I still think Andunie is just sly way for Anthony to name the blog after himself in arcane fashion...

Looks good, guys. Keep it up...occasionally.

Nice site. That James Card... he sure is a boffo web designer. (James did not pay me to say that.)
